Chapter fifteen

“This witch is insane. She’s sacrificing animals to travel back and forth between worlds? I don’t know what to say except what an absolute bitch,” I cried, slamming my palm against the wheel to calm the frustration bubbling inside my chest.

“The next pagan store is in Tacoma and is called The Crystal Crow. How far away is that?” Bloodsworth asked, his eyes on his phone.

“Without traffic, probably an hour.” I glanced at him from the corner of my eye, seeing the wrinkles etched across his forehead. “Are we going to hit these stores today?”

He shook his head. “The other one closes soon and it is in Laurel, called The Changing Stones. That’s estimated to be three hours away with traffic, so we won’t make it.”

“We’ll get up early tomorrow and go there. But I have to say, I know both owners and they’d never do this.”

“Perhaps not, but one of their employees might and they don’t know about it.”

I sighed. “I hope not, but it seems like that’d be the case. Althea and Thomas would never do such a thing.”

“How long have you known the owners of both shops?”

“Since I moved here. I was homesick, so I stopped in and introduced myself but I didn’t tell them about my abilities. However, after a couple of weeks, they both figured it out and asked me. I didn’t want to lie because they’re both really sweet, so I told them the truth. I don’t regret it though, not this time. They’re one of the few people in this area that know about me who are human beings. But the best part is, they don’t care. Althea can see faeries, and I don’t visit them often enough for them to ask for favors, I guess.”

“Or they are kind and don’t want to use you. If not that, they have people in their covens that have similar abilities and don’t need your help.”

“Yes, it’s true. They have three legitimate psychics and Althea, so I’m sure that keeps them on their toes.”

Bloodsworth laughed. “You know how to tell if psychics are telling the truth or not?”

I nodded as I kept my eyes on the road. “You know how there’s a feeling before I see an other being’s glamour and I see their aura? Same thing, but humans are never glamoured. First, it’s a feeling of familiarity. Then when I look at their aura, it’s always buttercup yellow and flickering like a candle.”

“Fascinating. You could make a lot of money for covens pointing out fake psychics,” Bloodsworth replied, but he knew what my answer would be.

“I’ve thought about it, but that’s how you make enemies.”

We drove in silence for fifteen minutes until we got off at Exit 134 via I-5. I took two rights and one left before we arrived at our second destination, The Crystal Crow. It’d been in business for twenty years and was one of the most popular destinations for Wiccans, neo-pagans, spiritualists, or anyone with an open mind. It was a red brick building two stories high with cream shutters and a glass front door.
